Safety inspectors are checking out a strip mall in Marana after a portion of an outdoor roof collapsed injuring four people. The damage was caused when strong winds hit the building near Tucson Monday.

A portion of the roof collapsed just as a monsoon moved across the area. Northwest Fire District Spokesman Adam Goldberg said it appears the wind lifted a section of drywall off of the roof in a corridor at the strip mall. He said it fell on top of people waiting outside of an Arizona DES building.

"This drywall is one or one and a half inches thick and it does have some significant weight to it," Goldberg said. "It dropped about 16 to 17 feet down on four patients.”

He said one woman was trapped beneath the drywall until the pile of debris was lifted off of her. Goldberg said the building was constructed in 1979 and it appears the drywall was weakened by years of dry rot.
