The Tucson City Council has unanimously approved a memorial resolution regarding thousands of migrant children from Central America being held at shelters in Arizona. It asks the Obama Administration and Guatemala’s government to do more to help the children when they arrive illegally in the United States.

Councilwoman Regina Romero wrote the resolution that passed Tuesday and will be mailed to the White House and consulate officials in Guatemala. She said Tucson can’t stand by and do nothing while the migrant children continue to cross the border only to be captured and sent to federal holding centers.

"As a city, we care about what happens to our residents whether they are documented or not, and that we see the effects of people being dropped off at a bus station, children being warehoused in a district in Nogales,” Romero said.

The Guatemalan government said it plans to open new offices in Tucson so it has closer access to the children from that country held in Nogales. The resolution was amended to include language that said the U.S. should do more to spark economic activity in Central America.
