The Arizona Department of Transportation says repairs to a landslide-damaged highway in the northern part of the state will begin later this month.

ADOT says the State Transportation Board has approved $25 million for the reconstruction of US 89 between Bitter Springs and Page. The roadway was heavily damaged in February 2013, after a 500-foot section buckled about 25 miles south of Page.

As part of the repair, crews will move the roadway about 60 feet away from the landslide area, and use rock material removed for the realignment to build a downslope buttress to stabilize the area.

The closed section of roadway is to reopen before the summer travel season next year. While work on the project will begin in about two works, major work is expected to start in late August, when crews start drilling and blasting in the area.

Drivers have been using Navajo Route 20 to get around the area.
