A chance to buy Air Force Two
Presidential and aviation buffs can bid on a piece of history today. An airplane that once carried vice presidents is going up for auction this morning, and it has had many famous fliers. Its primary mission was to carry the vice president, but presidents Ford, Carter, Reagan, Clinton and both Bushes also flew aboard the DC-9. It was designated as Air Force Two, the vice president’s plane, but it became Air Force One whenever it transported a president.
The plane is now parked at the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport as it awaits Wednesday's online auction at 9 a.m. The presidential seal is gone, but according to the General Services Administration, it still has that distinctive, white-and-blue paint scheme.
The starting bid is $50,000. The winner will get the plane and spare parts located in North Carolina.
