Conference to focus on education of American Indian children
Northern Arizona University’s College of Education is hosting a conference starting today that aims to improve the education, and lives of American Indian children.
Language activists, and educators from community and K-12 schools, colleges and universities will gather in Flagstaff, for a series of panels and workshops.
Organizers call it a combined conference, with the 20th annual Stabilizing Indigenous Languages Symposium and the 4th American Indian / Indigenous Teacher Education Conference.
They say the needs of American Indian students need to be assessed within the social and cultural context in which those students exist. They say teaching models based on western society aren't necessarily the best fit.
Among other topics, participants will discuss the challenges of starting tribal schools, Indigenous language revitalization and the progress and challenges of implementing the Common Core Standards in math and English. The conference runs through Tuesday.
