Arizonans have new tool to compare hospital cost, performance

The state health department wants to make
it easier to compare health care at hospitals around
AZ Hospital Compare is an online tool that’s set to go live Monday. The website is managed by the Arizona Department of Health Services and uses federal and state information.
It’s a searchable database that lets patients see discharge rates, get quality scores, and compare specific types of procedures at different hospitals.
The State Health Director wrote on his blog the tool lets patients see how much different hospitals charge for things like knee replacements, or how different hospitals fare in categories like uncomplicated childbirth.
The health department believes more transparency will improve hospital performance.
