Census error forces Yuma budget cut

June 04, 2013

A mistake in the 2010 U.S. Census is forcing Yuma officials to alter their proposed budget for the next fiscal year.

The Yuma Sun reports the Census mistakenly counted the population of a 2,400-inmate state prison as being in Yuma. The prison is actually in San Luis, and the subtraction of the inmates from Yuma's population means the city is entitled to less population tax funding shared by the state.

The city’s finance director says Yuma will have to subtract $400,000 of projected revenue from the $155 million budget. He says that will result in changes to the budget, but not major ones.
