Some up-and-coming fashion designers will have a chance to show their stuff Friday night, and try to make some sales.

The Emerging Designer Fashion Show at Scottsdale's Hotel Valley Ho is put on by Phoenix Fashion Week. Abbei Marquis is the group’s Designers and Buyers Team Leader.

"Phoenix is a new hub for fashion. A lot of manufacturing is coming here, designers are here, creativity is budding, everything is kind of on its way up right now," Marquis said.

Marquis said her group aims to connect designers and buyers, and to showcase some of the fashion happening in the Valley.

"I think we sometimes get pigeon-holed as a place that’s not very fashionable. But once we kind of explain the Phoenix Fashion Week platform and what’s actually happening here in the Valley, people tend to get on our side and want to come down and visit and see what it’s all about," she said.

Friday’s event will feature 14 designers, all of whom are competing for the title of “Designer of the Year.” Seven of them are from Phoenix, including Misha Mendicino Designs.

"I design and create women’s resort wear, very much inspired by the tribal prints of South Africa — lush tropical prints from Maui, and some geo-prints from New York," said Misha Mendicino, who owns the company.

Mendicino said she’s only been designing clothes for about a year, but it trying her best to, you know, make it work.
