South Mountain

A section of South Mountain Park remains closed due to the heavy storm earlier this week. The city of Phoenix decided to close part of the mountain to asses for any serious damage.

City officials said the storm earlier this week caused a rock and debris slide seven feet deep in some sections as water washed down the roadways. The area has been cleared of rubble. Now, road engineers and landscape architects will inspect the area for damage on and alongside the roadways and areas leading up to the top.

“We want to make sure that all our roads are safe, that there’s nothing unforeseen or not visible that’s weakened the roads," said  David Urbinato with Phoenix Parks and Recreation. "And so, next week we’re gonna have to start a more detailed engineering inspection of all the roadways to make sure they’re sound and safe for traffic.”

Urbinato said visitors can access the Ranger and Kiwanis trailheads and some of the picnic areas. But drivers and riders will not be allowed past the one-mile mark.
