Just a day after Republican Doug Ducey won his party’s nomination for governor, the gloves are off.

The Republican Governor’s Association, a political action committee, aired a TV ad blasting Democrat Fred DuVal’s record on education.

The ad accuses DuVal of increasing college tuition when he served on the Board of Regents. The ad was not paid for by Ducey’s campaign.

DuVal said that, while he wasn’t surprised by the attack, he’s hoping he and Ducey can focus on the issues.

"I would like to have candidate-to-candidate discussion. I’ve called upon Doug, as I did the other primary candidates, to shut down the dark money, call them out, ask them not to come," DuVal said. "I’m prepared to do that, I’m prepared to say, ‘don’t spend money on my behalf. Stay away.’ Let’s have the candidates talk about who they are, what they believe, what they want to accomplish."

DuVal also said wants to focus on the political dysfunction plaguing the state. 

"I’ll call for an independent ethics commission that can look at some of these things so that we can clean it up, so that we are no longer grist for the Jon Stewart show, but rather becoming best practice: a place for growing business, where we’re innovating the future, where talent wants to stay, where our graduates of high school and college can find jobs," DuVal said.
