Summer Heat A Challenge For Valley Restaurants

July 17, 2013

When it is 115 degrees outside or 105 degrees with rising humidity, you may not want to heat up your kitchen by cooking in the oven, and firing up the barbecue is not a refreshing way to spend the afternoon, either. Going out is an option, because you have to eat, but then you may have to wear something other than a t-shirt and bathing suit. So maybe you just pick up a pizza.

The heat is a major challenge to the Valley’s overall economy, and it affects the restaurant industry. A recent Arizona Republic article cited a couple of critical favorites, Beckett’s Table and Crudo, that will be closed for weeks in July and August.

Andrew Fritz is owner and general manager of Citizen Public House in Scottsdale. He talked about how he is dealing with the summer slowdown.

Laura Hahnefeld, food critic for the Phoenix New Times and Ty Largo, principal and creative director for public relations and marketing firm Salt talked about  the impact of summer on restaurants in the Phoenix area.
