Arizona Unemployment Up To 8 Percent

July 19, 2013

Arizona's jobless rate was up two-tenths of a point last month, on some unexpected soft numbers in education.

It's not unusual for education to drop off at this time of the year, as non-professional staffers are laid off over the summer. But this year's drop was higher than average and helped push the seasonally-adjusted jobless rate to 8 percent. Economist Aruna Murthy says there were some bright spots but also had words of warning,

“Right now the only sector in retail that's really growing in terms of employment is motor vehicles and parts,” Murthy said. “And if the interest rates go up and that sector purchases decline or slow down, that will have an impact overall.”

Murthy says employment at retail stores was down in June, as was construction employment.
