Sunday Monsoon Storm Soaks Valley

July 22, 2013

A monsoon storm that rolled through metro Phoenix on Sunday morning brought about a half inch of rain and sent water rushing through washes while flooding streets and homes. Overall, the Valley officially got 0.89 inches of rain on Sunday. Phoenix fire crews dealt with a pair of swift water rescues, each caused by people trying to cross flooded neighborhood washes. Larry Nunez says one involved an elderly man in a Corvette.

“It went down maybe a couple hundred yards, about maybe three blocks, before it came to rest in an area that was kind of high-centering it,” Nunez said. “The person was still in the vehicle. Water rescue crews did make a shallow water crossing to the patient.”

None of the people involved in Sunday's rescues was injured. The storms also forced the closure of the Superstition, US 60, for a time in Tempe, State Route 88, northeast of Apache Junction, and State Route 238, west of Maricopa.
