The Mohave County Board is saying ‘no way’ to an expansion of the Mexican Gray Wolf recovery zone.  The board unanimously approved a resolution Monday saying the wolves would not be welcome in the northwest Arizona county unless they have been vaccinated, have a dog license and have been spayed or neutered. The resolution is unlikely to have much impact.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will ultimately decide whether the wolves will be allowed to roam outside eastern Arizona and western New Mexico. It is studying whether to allow them to habitat the area between Interstate 40 and Interstate 10 from western Arizona to eastern New Mexico.

Some livestock owners and hunting guides oppose any expansion, saying the wolves would endanger their livelihoods by killing cattle and wild game. 

Fish and Wildlife Recovery Coordinator Sherry Barrett said spaying or neutering the animals would defeat the project's purpose, but she said the wolves are vaccinated before they are released.
