U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake and Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich will be in Mesa today to tour a special treatment court for veterans.

With more than 500,000 veterans living in Arizona, Flake will soon introduce legislation to expand access to the program.

Officials say treatment courts have helped reduce recidivism for those who end up in the criminal justice system. But the problem is there aren’t enough outreach specialists to help everyone. The specialists are dedicated to working one-on-one with those who served.

“So they work to identify veterans in the jails, in our court systems,” Brnovich said. “They assess their health and social needs, and then link them to the support and services that those veterans need.”

There are currently nine outreach specialists in Arizona. If the bill passes, 50 more would be added nationwide, Brnovich said.
