Ending Chronic Homelessness For Phoenix Veterans

August 09, 2013

President Obama came to town this week mainly to talk about housing and the economy, but near the end of his speech, he gave Phoenix a shout-out for its work in another area. “Here in Phoenix, thanks to the hard work of everyone from Mayor Stanton to the local United Way to US Airways, you’re on track to end chronic homelessness for veterans by 2014,” President Obama said.

While the president gave props to one city’s program, we wanted to find out how the state is doing overall, so we called Sean Price. He is the homeless coordinator for the Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services.

In Phoenix, Central Arizona Shelter Services provides beds for nearly a thousand people a night, and Gene Wikle, director of Veterans’ Affairs for CASS, said on any given night, at least some of them are vets.
