The commissioner of Major League Baseball reiterated support for the Arizona Diamondbacks during a press conference Tuesday at Chase Field.

The club is locked in a legal battle with the Maricopa County Stadium District. The lawsuit sprang from a public spat over who should pay for nearly $200 million in repairs and upgrades to the stadium.

“It is unusual, it would be unusual, for a tenant to be responsible for those sort of capital repairs and we think the Diamondbacks have taken a correct position,” said Rob Manfred, commissioner of Major League Baseball.

The key question, Manfred said later during the press conference, is if the Stadium District has taken steps to make sure Chase Field is “of a Major League quality.” Manfred cited studies by the Diamondbacks and the District which “suggest that’s not the case.”
