Tucson-based Vector Space Systems had its first successful rocket launch last week. The company's long-term plan is to build a rocket factory in Pima County.

Vector is staffed by space and software industry veterans from SpaceX, McDonnell Douglas and Boeing among others.

The successful test of the company’s prototype rocket-launch vehicle is its first, funded by a private company.

CEO and co-founder Jim Cantrell says his goal is to make “space open for business."

He says by next year, the company’s goal is to advance Vector’s programs, and its partnership with NASA, to successfully launch a small-lift rocket into space, one capable of carrying up to 4,400 pounds into orbit.

Cantrell also says Vector will accelerate its flight tests, open a Silicon Valley location and break ground on a rocket factory in Pima County.
