The WPA building on the Arizona State Fairgrounds.

The Arizona State Fair opened today and, along with all the deep-fried goodness, visitors can check out a building that’s been in the news for a non-fair related reason.

This summer, a judge blocked the fair from demolishing the Civic Building, built in 1938, which served as a headquarters for the Works Progress Administration.

Bob Graham, an architect specializing in historic preservation, said this isn’t the only historic building at the fairgrounds that’ll need some attention. He said the WPA building and others have been neglected for a long time.
