Vice President Mike Pence meets Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey

Vice President Mike Pence arrived Tuesday afternoon greeting Gov. Doug Ducey, Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery and other local leaders at Phoenix Sky Harbor.

He continued on to a restaurant where families involved in local business came to offer ideas on the president’s sweeping proposal to overhaul the tax code.

Before that, though, Pence offered words of condolences to victims in Puerto Rico and Las Vegas — and he said this trip was still an important one amidst the other tragedies.

“The president wanted me to be here to listen to the families who are gathered here today, to listen to the job creators, to listen to the great leadership of Arizona, about the best way to go forward, to reduce the burden of excessive taxation on the American people and get Arizona and get America growing again," Pence said.

Pence asked families about what tax reform means to them.

“One of the things we were talking about before is the president’s talking about simplifying their tax code, seven brackets down to three," he said. "We think 90 percent of Americans should be able to file their taxes on one sheet of paper," he said.

The tax plan unveiled last week would cut corporate tax rates, eliminate the estate tax and double the individual income tax exemptions.
