The U.S. Department of Agriculture is giving the go-ahead to Arizona to try out a program that is more strict on those in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.

The program’s goal is to curb SNAP fraud when users replace their electronic benefit, or EBT card.

Right now, Arizona Department of Economic Security workers can’t contact an EBT user until after the fourth time they request a replacement EBT card in twelve months.

This two-year waiver now gives the agency power to require contact after a SNAP recipient asks for a replacement card more than twice in a year.

The state asked for the program and will collect data through November 2019 to see if it has any impact on the potential misuse of food assistance.
