More than 230 domestic violence victims have gotten treatment for traumatic brain injuries, through a program at the Barrow Concussion and Brain Injury Center at Barrow Neurological Institute.

The program has been around for about two and a half years, but officials are just starting to talk publicly about it now.

Dr. Javier Cardenas, the center’s director, says the program sees about 20-30 men, women and children a month. He says Valley shelters screen people for brain injury - if they test positive, they’re sent to the clinic, where they’re evaluated for physical, cognitive and behavioral health needs.

Cardenas, though, says there are a lot more people who need this kind of treatment who aren’t getting it.
