Labor Department: 99 Cents Only Stores Didn't Pay Arizona Workers
A popular discount chain is accused of shortchanging some of its Arizona employees. 99 Cents Only Stores will pay more than $273,254 to 125 employees.
The U.S. Department of Labor said its investigation found stores' cashiers and customers regularly interrupted assistant managers during their 30-minute meal breaks at 39 Arizona stores. If employee are not free from work duty during breaks, the law requires they be paid, and the Labor Department said 99 Cents Only failed to do that.
“The Wage and Hour Division is available and eager to provide assistance to employers to help them avoid wage violations,” Eric Murray, wage and hour division director in Phoenix wrote. “Employees must be paid in full and in compliance with basic rules. The U.S. Department of Labor provides a wide variety of tools to help employers understand these rules.”
