The U.S. Department of the Interior is deploying specialized law enforcement to southern border locations, including Arizona’s Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument.

News outlet The Hill reported an Interior Department memo revealed 22 officers will rotate over 21 days to support Border Patrol agents.

In a letter to Secretary Ryan Zinke, Arizona Congressman Raul Grijalva said he was not informed of the deployment beforehand and questioned both the cost and the selection of Organ Pipe as a target location. Grijalva, ranking member of the House Committee on Natural Resources, said he’s yet to receive answers.

A Department of Interior spokesperson told KJZZ that while they cannot discuss specific law enforcement operations, this is “the first of many steps [the] Interior will take to secure the homeland.”
