As schools tested toward Arizona’s “College and Career Ready Standards” in reading and math, there were a few bright spots in the AzMERIT scores. At Tucson Unified School District, eight-graders saw a eight-point jump in math, for instance.

TUSD’s Superintendent Gabriel Trujillo said he used a targeted, three-pronged approach, including in-school tutorial periods, focused resources on kids labeled partially-proficient who just needed that extra instructional time, and emphasizing the test’s critical importance throughout the district.

Trujillo spoke to KJZZ’s Paige Phelps about his initial thoughts on his district’s scores.
