Facial recognition technology has been appearing more throughout our society, most notably on the iPhone X. But now this type of technology can help find your lost pet.

Maricopa County Animal Care and Control is partnering with Finding Rover, a pet facial cognition service, to help connect owners with their lost animals. Owners can upload a picture online and the site will search a database of shelters to see if a similar-looking animal is at a local shelter.

Jose Santiago from Maricopa County Animal Care and Control said this not only helps pet owners get their best friends back, but also helps the shelters with the problem of overcrowding.

“If there is technology out there that can help alleviate some of this crowding and help get lost dogs back to their rightful owner," Santiago said. "We’re all for it.”

Santiago said Finding Rover is another step for owners to get their pets back, beside putting up flyers and posts on social media and micro-chipping.
