Many women who have worked in professional settings know that there can be something of a double bind in the workplace.

You speak up, and you might face backlash from peers and supervisors. Stay on the sidelines, and you may get passed over for opportunities for advancement.

Where men are seen as “assertive,” women are seen as “aggressive.”

The theory has been studied over and over again, but new research from Stanford University took a more in-depth approach.

Researcher Devon Magliozzi conducted a two-year case study looking at a large nonprofit that was already in the midst of a women’s development program. And, in the end, they found that the story holds true for most women.
