The American Civil Liberties Union has sued the Arizona Secretary of State, alleging she’s violating federal law with regard to voter registration.

The ACLU said Michele Reagan needs to more quickly update the address of voters who’ve moved, so they can cast ballots in November. Reagan says that’s happening, but won’t be done this year.

To talk about this, Ceridwen Cherry, staff attorney for the ACLU’s Voting Rights Project, joined The Show.

KJZZ spoke with Arizona Secretary of State Michele Reagan on Monday about the issue. She said her plan was put into place with voters in mind.

“Imagine right before an election, you’ve got half a million people getting letters that is confusing them as to the address of their voter registration. It’s just not a good idea. We try to make decisions on lawsuits about whether we’re going to settle something or deny something based on what’s best for the voters," said Reagan.

She said there are also logistical issues to consider.

“There's a lot of people involved in this and it can't be done quickly without, one, a bunch of money, and, two, really confusing voters," Reagan said. "So this is already in the pipeline. We've already agreed to do this. The state's already agreed to do this. It's something that is scheduled already for 2019.”

The judge has not scheduled a hearing in this case.
