The University of Arizona Nursing School is trying to help smokers quit the habit permanently by using a visualization technique called “guided imagery.”

Judith Gordon, professor at the UA Nursing School, said participants are coached on the method that teaches smokers to visualize themselves changing their behavior when the urge occurs to light up.

"Combining behavioral coaching and this mental rehearsal through guided imagery and nicotine replacement is the most successful and effective method for quitting smoking,” she said.

The study is geared to appeal to men and also incorporates the use of nicotine patches to curb cravings.
