Without a driver’s license or state ID, it can be difficult for homeless veterans to get back on their feet. A policy change at the Arizona Department of Transportation aims to help.

Under a new state law, the Motor Vehicle Division can now waive the $25 fee to get a license or ID.

ADOT spokesman Doug Nick said verified veterans can qualify for the waiver with documentation from the VA or a service provider showing they have been homeless within the past 60 days.

“These veterans have given their service to this country so it’s important that we do all what we can to pay them back for what they’ve done," Nick said. "MVD is glad to be a part of a system that can help get them some of these needed services and documents.”

Several other fees, including those for a license suspension or revocation, and road tests for drivers moving to Arizona from another state, may also be waived.
