The Audubon Society just launched a “plants for birds” initiative aimed to encourage Phoenix residents to grow native plants in their yards. Many native bird species have left as non-native plants were introduced in the Phoenix area.

Dr. John Rowden of the Audubon Society says that these native plants can bring more species of native hummingbirds, roadrunners, cactus wrens and other birds to the area.

“It really helps the whole ecosystem to function more effectively when you have those plants because again, all of the swede of wildlife that live in and around the Phoenix area evolved with those plants so they really benefit from their presence," Dr. Rowden said.

Dr. Rowden also said the plants require low maintenance, having evolved in the heat of the desert. The plants will not only bring back native plant and animal species to the city, but can also reduce pollution.
