Two of the largest Native American reservations in the country are here in Arizona, the Navajo and Tohono O'odham nations.

In 2014, the White House administration released a report revealing more than a third of Native American children live in poverty.

The following year, then U.S. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell toured Native American schools on reservations around the country and found them in what she called “dreadful condition.” 

On Tuesday, Assistant Secretary of Indian Affairs Tara Mac Lean Sweeney announced the Gila River Indian community under the O’odham Tribe will get a $30.1 million award for its Blackwater Community School in Coolidge.

The school is among ten in the U.S. chosen for grants by Indian Affairs in 2016 under the Obama Administration’s No Child Left Behind program.
