Maricopa Integrated Health System, once referred to as the Maricopa County Hospital, is being renamed Valleywise Health next year. The change to the 140-year-old healthcare system is an effort to build a new image.

Valleywise Health is combining the name Valley to reflect the greater Phoenix area with wise to denote its teaching hospital mission.

Steve Purves, CEO of MIHS, said this was a natural change.

“This is a name that is a lot shorter than Maricopa Integrated Health System. It’s easy to use in our image building. And it certainly resonates better and better articulates what we do," Purves said.

Purves said the new name originated from market research over the past year. All systemwide MIHS facilities will adopt the new moniker by mid-2019.
