Canal Convergence Kicks Off On Scottsdale's Waterfront

Canal Convergence takes to downtown Scottsdale’s Waterfront on Friday night and, this year, the annual event featuring large-scale, interactive artwork will highlight the spirit of collaboration.
Earlier this year on The Show, we told you about one of the works that will be on display this week: ARIZONA! Is a larger-than-life, hand-crocheted lace ribbon that will wind over and around the canal at this year’s event. We talked to artists Jin Choi and Thomas Shine as they worked to recruit community members to help them crochet the massive piece.

Another collaborative installation this year comes from ASU’s Design School, where 10 graduate students in interior architecture, and 34 undergrads in industrial design worked together to create Cumulus.
Along with those, there was another layer of collaboration to this project. The ASU students worked throughout the semester with 120 middle-schoolers from Tonalea School in Scottsdale. The outcome is a project that’s tells a story about what it means to experience water and community in the desert.
The Show spoke with the project leader, Milagros Zingoni, as well as Collin Smith, to talk more about it. Both are assistant professors at ASU’s Design School, and we began by talking about how this collaboration came to be.
