A chimney stack that was part of Arizona’s mining history has been safely demolished.

The chimney stack, which was built in 1924, was part of the Magma Copper Company's operations in Superior Arizona for nearly five decades.

It was taken down by a company called Resolution Copper because it was structurally unsound and posed safety concerns.

According to a statement from the company, the removal of smelter structures is necessary to clean all contaminants out of the soil.

The statement read in part: "Resolution Copper understands the cultural significance of the Magma Copper smelter complex for the Superior community, and the company is funding a study for a legacy project to commemorate the town’s rich mining history."

The removal and cleanup of the area is part of a larger project which will conclude in 2020.
