The Arizona secretary of state’s race is still too close to call after Tuesday evening’s latest ballot count. The counting is expected to go into the weekend.

Democrat Katie Hobbs’ lead fell slightly, but she is still more than 5,000 votes ahead of Republican Steve Gaynor.

Maricopa County still has 126,000 ballots to process.

Gaynor led by about 40,000 votes after election night, and the Associated Press called the race for Gaynor that evening. But Hobbs refused to concede.

The AP retracted the call Monday. The media group declined an interview request to discuss its methodology, but the AP’s website says “responsibility for calling races rests with experienced staff in each state." And, that those staff are assisted by experts in Washington, where a so-called “decision desk” has the final signoff for top-of-the-ticket calls.
