Construction is underway north of State Route 238 in Maricopa.

The Valley is home to many private country clubs where golf is the big draw. Soon, what’s being called the first private motorsports country club will open in metro Phoenix.

Construction is underway in the city of Maricopa, about 30 miles south of downtown Phoenix. That’s where Apex is building two race tracks, climate controlled garages, and a clubhouse featuring a restaurant, fitness center and child care. Memberships range from $30 to $75,000.

Maricopa city leaders think Apex Motor Club will spur economic development, but some residents have filed lawsuits because they worry the 280-acre project will bring unwanted traffic and noise.

“There’s always obstacles, there’s always things that, but the ability to say that we’re open for business and we want you here and we want to overcome this together is a really big deal,” said Mayor Christian Price during a recent groundbreaking ceremony. “And, so that’s something we’ve been working on inside the city and, with City Manager Horst and the council, I think we’ve really tried to portray that what it means to be open for business.”

The first phase is expected to open in February 2019.
