The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department is considering expanding its Silent Sunday program at South Mountain Park. The department will be launching a pilot program from December 2018 to March 2019.

Spokesman Gregg Bach said Silent Sunday means closing down the main roads to vehicles into the park. The goal is to reserve the road is for activities like walking or cycling.

“We’re looking at different ways that we can provide more options for the different user groups that we have in the park," Bach said. "It’s also part of some efforts where we’re looking to increase roadway safety throughout the park.”

Silent Sunday was previously held only once a month, but during this trial, it will be observed every week.
