It was a dark Wednesday for Arizona Diamondbacks fans, as the organization traded first baseman Paul Goldschmidt — inarguably the best player the team ever drafted.

But we’re told that the economic realities of Major League Baseball — and Goldschmidt being one year away from a very expensive contract via free agency — made this the wisest decision. We’ll have to wait and see if the three players and the draft pick the Diamondbacks will receive from the St. Louis Cardinals ever pan out as big leaguers.
