House leadership at the Arizona Legislature has dissolved a committee charged with sentencing and recidivism reform.

Earlier this year, an ad hoc committee on criminal justice reform was dissolved after the assigned chairman, Rep. David Stringer, made controversial comments about immigration.

At the time, House Speaker J.D. Mesnard said that while he recognized there is bipartisan interest in criminal justice reform, “to avoid compromising the issue, future work will not take place in the form of this committee.”

Now after further controversial comments from Stringer, the Sentencing and Reform Committee has been dissolved.

House Speaker-elect Rusty Bowers said in a statement the “House Judiciary Committee will take on criminal justice reform,” led by the Chairman, Rep. John Allen.
