A group of light rail supporters is challenging petitions gathered by another group that opposes the expansion of light rail in Phoenix.

A proposed ballot initiative called the Building a Better Phoenix Act would prevent future light rail construction and redirect money to improving current transportation infrastructure.

The Arizona Chapter of Associated General Contractors of America announced Wednesday they are filing a lawsuit against the committee behind the ballot initiative.

An attorney representing the Contractors group called the initiative flawed, saying the wording was confusing and elements of the signature gathering process violated state law.

Attorneys challenging the initiative say they filed the suit in Maricopa County Superior Court.
