A new member of the Arizona Corporation Commission says she wants to make Arizona the solar capital of the world. Commissioner Sandra Kennedy told a group of supporters at a swearing-in ceremony Monday she was there to deliver on promises.

“To stop the corruption. To stop unjustified rate increases. And to lower rates that were unjustly raised,” Kennedy said.

Kennedy was elected to a four-year term on the commission in November along with Commissioner Justin Olson, who was appointed by Gov. Doug Ducey in 2017.

Kennedy, the lone Democrat on the five-member commission, said she would focus on repairing public confidence in the institution. She threatened to subpoena public utility campaign spending and pledged to request a reopening of the most recent APS rate case.

The Corporation Commission is responsible for regulating public utilities and other businesses, adopting rules and deciding contested matters.

The commissioners unanimously elected Bob Burns to serve as chairman.
