Fees on rideshare trips to and from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport could increase by a vote of the Phoenix City Council.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport reached a new milestone last year. The airport’s Greg Roybal said 44,943,686 travelers passed through Sky Harbor. That’s 939,846 more than the previous record of 44,003,840 set in 2015.

“It shows that we have a pretty nice place to come to here in the Valley and the state, and it shows that the economy is going probably pretty well,” Roybal said. “The airport is considered the economic engine for Arizona.”

Travel is especially heavy in the spring with students on break and baseball fans attending spring training games. Sky Harbor has been focused on growing international business. In late March, American Airlines is expected to launch nonstop service from Phoenix to London. Last year, Condor Airlines started service from Phoenix to Frankfurt and Air Canada added a nonstop flight to Montreal.

Earlier this month, Sky Harbor opened a new south concourse at Terminal 3, and the north concourse is currently being renovated.
