Citing a study commissioned by the county, the Coconino County Board of Supervisors said they will push for the North Rim of the Grand Canyon to expand its tourism season.

Due to weather, the North Rim is currently only open during the summer months. A Northern Arizona University study, however, found expanding two weeks into October and May would boost the regional economy by $14 million.

Tourism promoters in northern Arizona and southern Utah have long advocated for a longer tourism season. The study found an extra month could also draw nearly 38,000 additional visitors to the region and support 183 jobs.

However the study didn’t consider the cost to the National Park System or maintenance to highways around the park.
