Last year, when stories came to light of young children being taken from their parents by federal agents at the U.S.-Mexico border, there was concern from Republicans and Democrats alike.

That was part of the Trump administration’s "zero-tolerance" policy, and the consequences for families who were separated are ongoing.

Now, six mothers whose children were taken from them after they came to this country seeking asylum are taking the first steps toward suing the government over the trauma that caused.

The group has filed administrative claims against the U.S. government seeking millions of dollars in damages.

Mary Kenney is a senior attorney with the American Immigration Council and one of the counsel for the six women who filed claims on Monday.
