Officials at Perry High School in Gilbert are responding after parents accused school administrators of demanding students remove clothing and accessories with President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” logo.

In a letter to parents, Perry Principal Dan Serrano denied that students were disciplined for wearing political attire, saying that they complied during the school day after causing a disruption and creating a safety concern during a spirit day themed “Party in the USA.”

It wasn’t until after school ended when Serrano said a resource officer asked the students to leave campus after the Trump apparel was brought out again.

Serrano said students can’t be suspended for exercising First Amendment rights, but one parent told the Arizona Republic that a student was suspended. The Chandler Unified School District, which Perry High School is a part of, cannot comment due to student protection laws.
