Affordable housing is at a critical shortage nationwide. In five western states, including Arizona, the situation is even more dire.

No major metro area or state has an adequate supply of rentals, with Arizona third worst in the nation. That’s the finding from the National Low Income Housing Coalition in a report released Thursday.

Nationwide, it finds fewer than four rental homes affordable and available for every 10 extremely low-income renters. Seventy-one percent of extremely low-income renters are severely burdened by housing cost, spending more than half of their limited incomes on rent. They account for nearly 73 percent of all severely cost-burdened renters in the United States. For Arizona, the percentage is more extreme.

About 78 percent of extremely low-income renter households have are severely cost burdened by rental expense. Approximately 204,000 households in Arizona are considered extremely low-income renters.
