January 22, 2012

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords announced Sunday that she will resign from Congress. She said she needs more time to heal from last year’s assassination attempt. From Tucson, Michel Marizco reports.

MICHEL MARIZCO: Speaking in carefully enunciated words, Giffords made the announcement in a prepared statement on YouTube.

GABRIELLE GIFFORDS: Thank you for your prayers and for giving me time to recover. I have more work to do on my recovery so to do what is best for  Arizona, I will step down this week.

MARIZCO: In the two minute video Giffords said there was still more work to be done, specifically with employment, border security and veterans benefits. Before she leaves, her staff said she will hold a private Congress on Your Corner event with some of those who were there when the gunman opened fire, killing six people and injuring 13 more. They also said she will attend the State of the Union Speech at the Capitol Tuesday night.
