This week is Southwest Wildfire Awareness Week, and the message officials are trying to spread is prevention now for protection tomorrow.

The goal of the week is to promote actions to prevent human-caused wildfires, both at home and on the road. Tiffany Davila with the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management said homeowners should keep up with landscaping.

“By doing so, you’re reducing the threat of a wildfire," Davila said. "You’re also making it easier for the firefighters when they have to come and defend your home.”

Davila also has a message for motorists.

“Make sure your tow chains are secured if you’re towing a vehicle or a boat or a trailer," Davila said. "We do have a lot of fires that start from sparking tow chains that are dragging on the highway.”

She also added that tires should be in good condition before hitting the road.
