April 15 is the deadline to file both federal and state tax returns. But, if you haven’t done them, and you don’t think you have time to get them done, you can file an extension on both the federal and state levels.

Through the IRS, if filled out by Monday, form 4868 allows taxpayers to delay filing until October 15.

In Arizona, Form 204 can be filled out to get a six-month extension. Ed Greenberg with the Arizona Department of Revenue said that form's deadline is also Monday.

“An extension does not grant a taxpayer more time to pay taxes owed," Greenberg said, "just more time to ensure they get the necessary documentation in place to complete their tax return.”

Greenberg reminds taxpayers to ensure all necessary lines or forms are filled out correctly on returns and to make sure to sign and date the return.

“We’re encouraging taxpayers to e-file," Greenberg said, "to select direct deposit for any refund. This year, the average processing times for refunds from electronically filed tax returns are about six days compared to 12 days for a refund from a paper return.”

Greenberg said the average state refund this year is about $554, down from last year’s average of about $585.
